Most pressure switches and toggle switches are not capable of supplying enough current to run Larger Compressors, (DC5000, DC7000,DC7500,DC9000) which is why a solenoid is installed. The solenoid receives a large electrical current from the battery and a small electrical current from the pressure switch. When the tank pressure drops below the designated pressure, the pressure switch is turned on and a small electric current is sent to the solenoid. This causes the solenoid to close a pair of heavy contacts, thus relaying a large electric current to the compressor motor.
