They keep your tank Pressure from bleeding back through the compressor. Tank will not mainTain Pressures if check valve is not used. The best place for a Check Valve is on the tank at the air input port. If you do not use a Check Valve, the pressure from the tank, bleeds back thru the piston head and your compressor may not restart under the pressure, and you will trip the circuit breaker trying to restart over 120psi.
